Maintenance
Stainless steel is a material with a high resistance to corrosion. However, it is essential to periodically clean the surfaces to avoid contamination or deterioration of the stainless steel by pitting.
The contact between different metals forms what we call galvanic pairs which, under certain environmental conditions, undergo corrosion called galvanic corrosion.
Oxidation of metal particles embedded in the surface of stainless steel leads to the formation of brownish iron oxides. What rusts are the carbon steel particles. If we do not clean these particles, the stainless steel itself begins to be attacked, this phenomenon is called contamination.
How to avoid it:
- Periodically clean the surfaces.
- Avoid contact between stainless steel and carbon steel.
- Avoid damage to the surface of the stainless steel to prevent the incrustation of particles in those areas.
- Isolate dissimilar metals or alloys to prevent galvanic corrosion.
